If you want to save space and keep a contemporary looking kitchen, a counter and bar with stools will do both, and may limit your need to hang on to that oversized dining room table. Investigate the idea of a bar that opens up into another room of your home. Or a breakfast nook may be ideal for you. If you like the idea of a casual kitchen, but sit down to the table at least once a week, a small breakfast nook may fit your needs perfectly.
Perhaps you are king or queen of the kitchen and often entertain guests. Then you’re going to need a lot more counter space because no one likes to prepare food in a small, cluttered area. And having an island is a no-brainer. It provides a space to keep more dishes or supplies and more room to work. Just remember the work triangle rule. A work triangle is an imaginary set of lines forming a triangle between the refrigerator, sink and work area. Most designers will tell you that your work triangle should be no larger than 26 feet with legs no longer than 9 feet. The triangle is meant to eliminate wasted space and effort, so keep this in mind when designing your kitchen.
Finally, think about hiring a kitchen designer. Event though you may want to remodel your home yourself, a designer will have unmatched knowledge and experience in getting you the design that is right for your lifestyle.
